HELP!

Hey all - I need your help!

I've been working on some larger paintings and need to pick which one is going to be in the Colorado Governor's Show next month. The show is held at the Loveland Museum, and my work will be hanging alongside some beautiful work from 50 other Colorado painters. Needless to say, it's the type of show where I try to have one larger painting that will make an impact and get the attention of collectors.

I'm sort of terrible at making decisions like this about my own art - I see it so much while I'm working on it that my opinions get skewed by the time a painting is finished. So, I thought I'd put this one out there and get some opinions. I have it narrowed down to two paintings, and I'd like to know which one you like best (i.e. Which one grabs your eye first? Which would catch your attention in a crowded room?).

Here are some larger images of the paintings (you can click on them to enlarge a bit). After you've looked, either vote by clicking your choice in the poll below, or leaving an opinion in the comments. Thanks so much for your opinions!!

1.) "Aspen Grove" - Oil on Panel, 30x40"

2.) "First Snow, Berthoud Pass" - Oil on Panel, 30x40"

  1. Aspen Grove - I think it would pull me in from across the room with those lines drawing the viewer in.

  2. 100% Aspen Grove....i was just on your site today looking at the new large paintings you posted and as soon as i saw the thumbnail for this it jumped right out at me...it's a great composition, very fresh take of a landscape, the tall trees really add a sense of drama and the dramatic perspective the the trees receding is really eye catching. beautiful, attention getting painting....of course, that's just my opinion!

  3. Aspen Grove. Definitely.
The other one is less interesting, less uniquely you (it could be anyone who painted it, whereas the top one is unmistakably Stacy Peterson), easier to get lost on the midst of other paintings in the room.

  4. Aspen Grove! It's lovely! Well, both are lovely but the grove one is stronger and more unique I feel.

  5. No contest - Aspen Grove wins hands down. It is unique and with a great color combo, really grabs you. The other is a beautiful rendition of a scene we have all seen many times. Good luck!

  6. Hi Stacey, I don't want to be the only dissenter in the group, but if I were to BUY a painting, it would be First Snow. To me, it's so beautifully pleasing. I could look at it all the time and never tire of it. Aspen Grove is beautiful also and will probably stand out because of the unusual composition.

  7. While I like them both I prefer Aspen grove.

The reason is that with the tall aspens in the foreground and the shadows there is an intimate mood created where I become part of the scene. The other image will still very good has me more as a viewer and not a participant in the scene.

I wish you luck with your entry.

  8. Aspen Grove. The subject matter is a little more unique than the mountain top painting.

Good luck. Let us know how the show goes.

  9. Two beautiful paintings. My vote is "First Snow." I love open mountain vistas and you have a great sensitivity and skill for aerial perspective.

Wish I could go the Governor's Show and see "Aspen Grove" or "First Snow" in person. One day.

By the way, that PollDaddy widget is cool, too.

  10. Hmmm - so far, "Aspen Grove" is way ahead in the comments, and also ahead in the poll by about 2/1. We'll see if that holds!!

I have a gallery that really wants the Berthoud Pass painting (it's a local scene), so if "Aspen Grove" goes in the Gov's Show, he'll be happy to take the other =)

  11. They are both lovely- and I agree Aspen Grove has a more unique composition and a more intimate feel (which is what I like) but its also more of an "artists" painting perhaps, i.e., artists can appreciate the close values, unique composition, etc. Whether that translates into a painting that sells at this show-I don't know. Although First Snow is certainly a more generic composition, it has some rich lovely darks that really make it pop.

  12. Aspen Grove: Lots of diagonals - diagonals give realistic 3 dimensional space to the scene. That along with the atmospheric perspective and subtle color transitions hits the mark.

  13. Aspen Grove all the way. Not that first snow is bad, but the way the trees are arranged in Aspen Grove suck me straight into the painting. Gotta love those leading lines.

  14. Both are beautiful. My vote is for Aspen Grove!

It has a freshness and feels like one could walk right into it.

    Best of luck!

  15. Aspen Grove gets my vote. It has great depth to go along with all the other fine qualities inherent in both paintings. Plus, if there is a gallery that wants the other one, It makes the choice much easier.

  20. Hey Stacey-
Both are good pieces to represent your state and your work, but my vote is for First Snow-
I think the color is richer and the light makes it come off the wall better than the first one.
